How to Access the NDIS: Step-by-Step for Beginners
If you or a loved one is living with a disability, the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) can provide life-changing support. But getting started with the NDIS can feel confusing, especially if it’s your first time applying. Here's a simple step-by-step guide to help you understand the process.
Step 1: Check If You’re Eligible
To access the NDIS, you must:
Be under 65 years old when applying.
Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or hold a Protected Special Category Visa).
Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your daily life.
You can check your eligibility online at ndis.gov.au.
Step 2: Make an Access Request
There are three ways to apply:
Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110.
Ask your GP or support provider to help you.
Fill out and submit the “Access Request Form” from the NDIS website.
You’ll need to provide supporting documents, including medical evidence.
Step 3: Get Assessed and Approved
Once your application is submitted, the NDIS team will assess your eligibility. If approved, you’ll be contacted to arrange a planning meeting.
Step 4: Attend a Planning Meeting
This meeting helps identify your goals and what support you need. You can bring someone with you, like a family member or support worker. Together, you’ll create your personalised NDIS plan.
Step 5: Start Using Your Plan
Once your plan is approved, you’ll receive funding to access services. You can:
Choose your providers (like Wattlewellness).
Decide how your plan is managed: by the NDIA, a plan manager, or self-managed.
